The Brakat (Braqat) Massacre

Abiy Ahmed’s forces, aka Ethiopia National Defense Force, committed a horrific massacre of innocent Amhara civilians in Brakat (Braqat), Gojam. This is the third massacre in the Mecha region of Gojam within a short period of time. The infamous Merawi Massacre took place in the same area of the Amhara Region, less than 25 miles from the city of Bahr Dar.

The Brakat attack of March 31, 2025 occurred following internal fighting between two of Abiy Ahmed’s loyal forces in the area. Abiy’s ENDF has deployed an extremely large force in Gojam, reportedly 70% of the entire Ethiopian army, and recently sustained heavy losses in its fight against the Fanno freedom fighters. When it cannot withstand the fire from the Fanno forces struggling for the survival of the Amhara people, it has become customary for Abiy’s ENDF force to indiscriminately massacre innocent Amhara civilians.

The Brakat (Braqat) Massacre that took place yesterday followed a similar pattern where the government forces launched a door-to-door attack, executing unarmed civilians including the young and the elderly. It was reported that the attackers did not even spare mentally disabled individuals.

At the beginning of the government’s all-out war on the Amhara Region, Abiy Ahmed’s forces destroyed a monastery in Debre Elias, killing over 500 believers and almost all the monks that they found there. Since then, they have particularly targeted the traditional church schools, wiping out the young students and their instructors, including very old blind theologians.
